Sergey K. ZYRYANOV

Dr. Sci. (Med.), Full Professor

Head of the Department of General and Clinical Pharmacology of the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia named after Patrice Lumumba, Moscow, Russia

Research interests

Pharmacoepidemiological and pharmacoeconomic studies, elaboration of methodological foundations for the organisation of pharmacovigilance service, the efficacy and safety of new medicines.

Key research accomplishments

Sergey K. Zyryanov created a scientific school of specialists engaged in a new direction of clinical pharmacology – personalising the use of medicines in special patient populations and assessing the clinical and economic impact of their use. Under the leadership of Prof. S.K. Zyryanov, therapeutic pharmaceutical monitoring of medicines used in the therapy of premature newborns with very low and extremely low birth weight, as well as in elderly and senile patients, and dosing schemes of antibacterial drugs and anticonvulsants for such patients have been introduced into the practice of medical institutions. Based on the obtained data, a number of models of population pharmacokinetics in premature newborns have been developed and introduced into clinical practice. S.K. Zyryanov organised pharmacoepidemiological monitoring to assess the safety of medicines in elderly patients. The use of this technology made it possible to identify groups of medicines, the use of which in such patients is accompanied by the risk of serious adverse reactions. The introduction of these innovative technologies for diagnostics and treatment of therapeutic and paediatric patients into clinical practice helped to improve the quality of medical care and reduce in-hospital mortality.

The research group led by Professor S.K. Zyryanov is actively developing modern approaches to conducting molecular diagnostics of polymorphism of opioid analgesic biotransformation genes and studying its role in the modification variability of analgesia in clinical oncology. Innovative approaches to improving the efficacy and safety of anticonvulsant therapy based on the study of polymorphism of cytochrome P450 system genes and therapeutic medication monitoring have been developed.

Under guidance of Professor S.K. Zyryanov and counselling, 11 candidate and 5 doctoral theses were defended.
